Bariatric Surgery Procedures
Basically it's two kind of procedures, restrictive and malabsorptive. Restrictive consists on reducing the stomach volume to receive less food and calories. Malabsorptive means that the food in the digestive tract is going to jump or "bypass" a portion of intestine to absorbe less calories.
Básicamente existen dos tipos de procedimientos, el restrictivo y el derivativo. El restrictivo consiste en reducir el volumen del estómago para recibir menos alimento y calorías. El derivativo es cuando el alimento brinca una porción del intestino para absorber menos calorías.
PROCEDIMIENTOS RESTRICTIVOS - RESTRICTIVE
Banda Gástrica - Gastric Banding
Consiste en crear un reservorio de menor volumen al poner una banda inflable que rodea la parte superior del estómago. Esta banda se ajusta o regula su volumen a través de un puerto que se aloja por debajo de la piel.
Ventajas- Es reversible (se puede retirar sin modificar el tracto digestivo).
No es contraindicada durante el embarazo.
Also known as Lap Band. It consists on making less reservoir volume by putting a adjustable band around the stomach, it´s inflated and regulated with water through a port that is under the skin.
Advantages- It´s reversible (it can be extracted without modifying the digestive tract).
It´s no contraindicated during pregnancy.

Manga Gástrica - Sleeve Gastrectomy
Se reduce el volumen gástrico por resección. El estómago adopta una forma de un tubo o "manga". Además se eliminta la hormona del apetito y te quita la ansiedad de antojos.
Reduces the stomach volume by resection. The stomach takes a form of a long tube.
Ventajas- Elimina la secresión de grelina (hormona del apetito).
No requiere de ajustes posteriores.
El seguimiento es menos estricto. No rechazo por cuerpo extraño.
No está contraindicado durante el embarazo.
Advantages- It takes away a hormone (ghrelin) that causes the craving. It doesn´t need posterior adjustments
The followup is less strict.
No foreign body failure.
Not contraindicated during pregnancy
PROCEDIMIENTOS DERIVATIVOS - MALABSORPTIVE
ByPass Gástrico - Gastric ByPass
Es un procedimiento que combina lo restrictivo y derivativo. Consiste en brincarse una porción de intestino creando un reservorio gástrico pequeño.
Ventajas- Efectiva en los "comedores dulces".
No requiere de ajustes posteriores.
Elección en conjunto con diabetes mellitus 2 y/o reflujo.
Procedure wich combines malabsorptive and restrictive procedures. It consists on jumpin or bypassing the first portion of intestinal tract and making a little stomach pouch.
Advantages- Efective in "sweet eaters".
It doesn´t need posterior adjustments
Indicated in patients with diabetes mellitus 2 and/or reflux.
